It's all well and good what you tell us, professor, but you didn't mention Greek mythology, which is the cradle of Greek history, and you still haven't corrected the Anglo-Saxon pronunciation of the Greek words that you trample on with your barbaric language. I hear some strange sounds when you pronounce Greek words that lose their etymology and their meaning with the way you pronounce them. Start pronouncing them correctly so that the Greeks will take you seriously... I know you understand what I mean but I want to hear you say it!

Well, I liked some of your work in the past, but this is an incredibly biased view. So sorry, but Egypt (and I’m not an Egyptologist) with mathematics heavily influenced the Greeks and Near East. The Greeks even would travel to Egypt for the knowledge there for quite a long time in history. The Near Eastern Civilizations didn’t just invent 22 letters and that’s it; they were highly influential into the development of ancient culture, between trade, and influencing the entire Mediterranean with ship building, literature, languages and script. Cuneiform alone, was used for several languages way longer than Greek culture has even been around. You could say, well we don’t use cuneiform today, we also don’t really use Greek (outside of Greece) script today in the same manner as the heavy lifting of the Phoenicians. The Bible alone has passages that predate Homer, and roughly 70% or more of the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament is older than the pre-Socratics. The primary turning point in the Bible, when Judah was sacked by the Babylonians, takes place 587-585BCE (before Socrates and obviously his student Plato), next major point in the Hebrew Bible after that comes in with the Persians in the 400s. I’m sorry, but these are all civilizations that predate almost anything in Greece (Egypt, Babylon, Assyria, Persia) and your argument is that they don’t really influence the western world. They influenced the Near East, and the Near East influenced the modern western world as well. Greece is only one branch of the tree. There are several examples which influenced the western world, outside of Greece, and they are not minor examples. Again, I do really enjoy this video, very well written and prepared, but it isn’t the fact that he wants to tie it solely to Greece, is just inaccurate. There are several factors that do come from Greece (which he lays out), but it is not the entire foundation where the western civilization came from.

The western world is basically the Euro-Christian civilization, including all the nations which have been established on the Greco-Roman foundations, and where Christianity is the dominant religion, so I wouldn't make a distinction between the Roman-Catholic and the Orthodox spheres, or I would even go so far as qualify the pre-islamic cultures in the Middle-East and North-Africa as remains of the western world, as they played an important role within the Greco-Roman civilization, and for development of Christianity.
